When I was in high school, I was in the jazz band, playing saxophone. Back then, our jazz bands competed and did very well in our region. There was a small crop of us that were good musicians and stuck together through several amateur musical pit orchestras, jazz bands, subbing in for the orchestra and everything else. I did the Chaminade Concertino for flute in my last year and then pretty much stopped playing.
There was another group of good musicians a couple years ahead of us. From what I hear, most of them went on to other careers as well – except for Darcy.
Darcy is a pianist, or was then, now he’s much more. He played constantly. I remember seeing him playing all the time in the music room (mainly because I was in there all the time too, hiding from the kids who threw food at me in the cafeteria). It was obvious then he was incredibly talented, and it is no surprise to me his debut album together with his big band, the Secret Society, was nominated for a Grammy.
Recently he was involved in a cool project combining live painting with a new work of his own, entitled Brooklyn Babylon. They’re looking to release a recording of this intriguing project – but they need your help. Watch the clip above and visit their Kickstarter page for more.
